Proposed Session Description
A 30 minute interactive conversation about how to get to those builders who are NOT currently “in”, and who are still building to code minimums, with fossil fuel equipment all over the building. I will invite a progressive builders (someone who IS in) as well as a builder who I know is ‘not in’, and discuss what it would take for us climate people to get them in. Let's discuss incentives, let's discuss the true overall cost add to make a buidling more climate conscious, let's discuss avenues that would help reach those who are not in. We often preach to the choir, and I think we need to discuss how to hit the rest of the market. It hurts to see buildings go up in 2021 with code minimum construction, and gas fired furnaces. I would refine this session closer to, and most likely act as the chair of the conversation / debate, with some triggering questions.

Yes - caveat, could this be a potential end of day discussion group session?? It sounds provacative and I like it. I would like to nail down more speakers and do some background research to make sure it really is engaging.

Round 2 Review- I think this would make a great closing session.  Pat Haydon of Haycon is willing to be the developer that  "IS IN" (Haycon is doing PH,MassTimber, all electric projects).   JS has two developers he think would be willing to take the "NOT IN" position tho JS said he might have to modify the description slightly so as not to make developer sound like a bad actor/wrong.   I'm pretty confident that if neither of the NOT IN representatives he is thinking of said they do it, that JS could get a fall back MEP Engineer who works with a lot of developers who are NOT IN and understands how they think.  So I do think this proposal is doable.  And I do think it is important to understand the perspective of developers who are only doing basic code and keeping fossil fuels in.  All at NESEA would learn by better understanding what is the NOT IN perspective.

R2 Discussion:Provactive Topic, maybe closing session, panel. Figure out who has not bought into vision, and invite them. Developers and maybe 3 person panel, maybe two developes and MEP. JS would be great at coodinating. Who is deciding code or who is deciding to go beyond. Who makes the decisions. How do we understand their perspective and shift it? Maybe business and finance? May have to change right up so not do good guy against bad guy, Mark Show would be happy to be MEP. Least defined, but provactive. Quesiton is interesting if people on panel have a good discourse.

Discuss / debate ways of breaking down those barriers.
Identify potential avenues to reaching those types of builders.
Has this session been presented before?
No
Session Format
Interview or structured conversation among panelists
Session Format Details
I would moderate a discussion between 2 or more builders of different view points, for 15 - 20 minutes, then encourage questions from the crowd and discussions.
Comments about your speaker roster
I will most likely invite Patrick Haydon from Haycon, as well as another builder who I know builds to code minimums. I may also bring a mechancial contractor who works on code minimum buidlings, as well as one that installs more progressive systems.

Full Description
Our biggest opportunity in construction in general, is reaching mass market as fast as possible. Helping those who are 'in' get better is important, but reaching those that are not 'in' can have an even greater impact.
