Kate has designed the most sqft of net zero and net zero ready buildings in New England.
Proposed Session Description
Zero carbon buildings are not a thing of the future. They are being built now at all scales, locations, and building types throughout Massachusetts. This session will present three net zero carbon projects representing small and large, urban and suburban, and private and public; a midrise multifamily, a public school, and a high-rise office building. An overview of the design strategies and processes, including cost-benefit and life cycle cost assessments, will be given followed by a panel discussion with the owners and developers of each project. The discussion will focus on the factors that made the net zero decision possible for each project.

Round One: YES.I have worked with Bubriski and with Quinlan, on a project that is probably part of this presentation. (Medfield Elementary School; I am Chair of Medfield Energy Committee. Unfortunately, as of yesterday, the project may not go ahead, for reasons having nothing to do with the excellent net-zero design.) I know Kate and Mike to be highly competent speakers; each of them brings a depth of knowledge and experience. I love the concept here: busting myths about zero carbon new construction, it's super-important. It's been exciting to see both these speakers evolve, and bring others along, in just the last two years. I hope the 90-minute slot is available; otherwise, three speakers is too many.

R1 Discussion: Nothing seems more applicable than this one, geography, stakeholders, etc. Strong recommendation from both reviewers. Two of three speakers are known. Possible, effective, case studies. Architect, developer, contractor on the spaker roster. One thing: have they presented on this school in East Cambridge before? Or is this another project in Medfield? Accessible to young people and hiring for positions.

Round 2: YesKate is going to be serving as a moderator/interviewer for three building owners/developers of both public and private Net Zero projects that are currently in development.  She wishes to focus this session on the fesability of building net-zero, and highlight the decisions that make building in this manner more practical, with lower life-cycle costs for the building owner.  The projects in question, are a tower, mid-rise, and school in Cambridge.  The downside of the proposal, is that there isn't case studies or data on how these buildings are performing, and whether these projects come in at budget and perform as well as attended.  But there should be lots of lessons learned, on how to make suistainable designs a reality across a large swath of buildings and building owners should prove interesting for many in the conference.

Diversity and Inclusiveness
Our speaker representing the design and technical aspects on the panel is a female leader in a firm that has a majority number of female employees and females in leadership positions.
Learning Objectives
Describe the cost-benefit assessment of net zero carbon buildings
Understand how to conduct a full picture life cycle cost assessment
Understand the near future requirements for regulated net zero buildings.
Implement technologies and design strategies of different building types to achieve net zero carbon buildings
Has this session been presented before?
No
Session Format
Presentation followed by facilitated discussion or breakout groups
Comments about your speaker roster

Full Description
This session will highlight public and private buildings that are designing to net zero carbon now. It will allow those who don't believe zero carbon is achievable or think that it comes with a high price tag to see that those are myths. Attendees will hear directly from a school district and developers about how they were able to set and achieve this goal. This will be an important session for all participants in the AEC industry in light of new zoning initiatives from Boston as well as the anticipated MA Net Zero Stretch Energy Code.
